As soon as a company exceeds a certain size, top management has to implement processes — or risk going to prison when things go wrong. That's where it gets messy.

There are processes, and they need to be followed. But if you want to advance in your career, you have to play the relationship game.

I have never worked in a company where HR truly operated on process. It always pretended to. What really counted was your relationship to the right people.

Yes, that is true. Yet some companies continue to work based on relationships, others adopt the processes a bit more. It's always a range!

Interesting distinction you make and I see where it is coming from.

Yet, the 4 companies that I have lived were all relationship-driven and, by speaking with friends in other industries, it would appear that theirs are the same.

Do you have in mind specific companies or fields where process-driven companies are a thing?

Well, I have seen both types of companies. But of course, this is not black and white, all companies are in a range. I don't see any indicators such as industry, size, etc. that make a company one of the types. It seems to be specific to the company culture.
